HOME OF THE BOB-BIT
Engstrom Enterprises, Inc. is Home of the Bob-Bit which is a high
performance “claw” type drill bit that enables our customers to save
money by increasing bit life and improving productivity. We specialize
in manufacturing custom bits and can make standard and non-
standard sizes depending upon your specific needs. All of our products
and services are backed by our Engstrom family commitment.
Engstrom Enterprises is a family affair providing excellent products and
service. James, Bob Engstrom’s youngest son, began watching him
work in the shop when James was 11 years old. Since that time, James
has taken welding and machining classes and he joined the company
full-time in 2001. James is now our lead welder and shop manager.
Bob’s oldest son, Tory, is a mine mechanic and he can be found
assisting James whenever his schedule permits. Bob’s father lives in
Texas but has spent the last two summers with us working in the shop
and helping maintain the grounds.
INCREASING PRODUCTIVITY AND PROFITS
The Bob-Bit is not an engineered drill bit; it evolved over time.
Although the company was founded in 1995, the Bob-Bit concept was
being developed long before we opened our doors and sold our first
bit. It was through Bob Engstrom’s mining experience in Campbell
County, Wyoming that he was able to envision incorporating two bits
into one, which would increase productivity and increase profits. To
date our customers have recognized drill bit costs in tenths of cent per
foot by rebuilding the Bob-Bit and have realized a 30% to 40%
increase in productivity.
HISTORY
From 1978 to 2002, Bob Engstrom had the good fortune of working
in the Powder River Basin in northeastern Wyoming as a heavy
equipment operator, trainer, and relief supervisor. In 1990 he
transferred to the Powder River Coal Company's Caballo Mine to the
drill and blast crew. Sometime within the first three years he began
envisioning a plan to incorporate two existing drill bits that they were
using at the mine site into one. One bit worked well in dirt and mud,
but not rock. The other one worked in rock and hard dirt, but did not
perform well in muddy conditions.
The evolution of the Bob-Bit took many attempts and trials to get it to
cut and wear to his satisfaction but hard work and perseverance payed
off. In 1996 he began the patent process and was awarded United
States and Canadian patents in 1998.
Today Bob is proud that all of the mines in Campbell County’s Powder
River Basin are using the Bob-Bit and a majority of our customers have
recognized the same percentages in increased productivity and bit life.
He is also proud that the Bob-Bit got its start in northeastern Wyoming.
Campbell County is the largest producer of coal in the North American
continent and one of the largest coal producers in the world, exceeding
400 million tons in 2005. In addition to the Powder River Basin,
Engstrom Enterprises services mines in Montana, Washington, New
Mexico, British Columbia, and Alberta, Canada and Australia.
In addition to mining applications, the Bob-Bit has also been used on
coal-bed methane drills in Wyoming’s Powder River Basin.
